Grabber crane with a 5 year old in Nashville
Age changes the answer more than anything else, so this one is written for a specific one.
Set against the other three, it is the machine that most rewards a plan: pick the spot, get the claw there, then close.
A Nashville school holiday runs out of ideas by about day three. This is a day-three answer rather than a day-one one.
How it lands at this age
The grabber crane has the longest boom of the four machines and a claw on the line, so it reaches the far side of the crate where the balls pile up.
Long reach means small movements at the controls turn into big movements at the claw. Children work that out fast and start moving in smaller and smaller nudges.
What to plan for
It is the machine parents underestimate. The long boom looks unwieldy from outside the rail and turns out to be the one children queue for twice.
Let the child choose what to do first even when it is the thing you would have chosen last. The order matters less than the choosing.

Worth knowing
Long reach means small movements at the controls turn into big movements at the claw. Children work that out fast and start moving in smaller and smaller nudges.
Two shorter visits teach a child more than one long one. The second time they already know what they want to try, and that is when the good part starts.
Questions parents ask
What makes the boom different?
It is longer than the others, so it covers the far side of the crate and reacts to smaller inputs.
Can two children use machines at the same time?
The machines stand around the same crate and reach different parts of it, so more than one can run at once.

Planning your visit in Nashville
The drive back to Nashville is where you find out what they actually thought. Children review an outing about twenty minutes after leaving it, never during.
A short visit that ends while they still want more beats a long one that ends in a meltdown, every time.
Agree the leaving time before you walk in, out loud, to the child. Announcing it later sounds like a punishment; agreeing it first sounds like a plan.
If you are coming from Nashville, treat it as a cross-town outing rather than a day trip. Go with a return time in mind and the day stays easy.
