Winter afternoons in China Grove for 10 year olds
Same room, completely different visit depending on how old the child is.
Winter shrinks the list of things to do with children to whatever is indoors and warm, or indoors and cold on purpose.
If China Grove is home, this is the sort of place you end up returning to rather than ticking off. That changes what a first visit is worth planning around.
How it lands at this age
An ice rink in winter is not the contradiction it sounds like: the cold is the attraction rather than the problem, and it lasts an hour rather than a day.
Let the child lead the order of things. Adults optimise; children choose the thing that looks best, and they are right more often than they are wrong.
What to plan for
Dress for the room you are going to, not the car park you are crossing.
On the Nashville side the answer is the opposite - a warm room, a deep crate of balls and machines that do not care what the weather is doing.
What parents notice
Winter shrinks the list of things to do with children to whatever is indoors and warm, or indoors and cold on purpose.
Tell a nervous child what is going to happen in the order it will happen. Surprise is the thing they mind, not the activity.
Worth knowing

Questions parents ask
Is the rink cold?
It is a real rink, so yes. Layers and gloves make the difference.

Planning your visit in China Grove
Families around China Grove who have done it once tend to plan the second visit differently: shorter, earlier in the day, and with the machine the child liked in mind.
Photograph the machine as well as the child. In two years you will have forgotten what the room looked like.
If two adults are coming, split up rather than shadowing the same child. One at the rail, one free, and everybody has a better hour.
A China Grove school holiday runs out of ideas by about day three. This is a day-three answer rather than a day-one one.
